Prenatal Physical Therapy FAQ
When should I start physical therapy in pregnancy?
Early second trimester (16-20 weeks) is when you should start seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist, unless you have pain that is presenting earlier in pregnancy.
Is pelvic floor therapy safe during pregnancy?
Yes, pelvic floor therapy is safe during pregnancy. Most physical therapists avoid internal work in the first trimester for liability reasons, but we are willing to work with you with clearance from your physician or midwife if you have a condition in which internal treatment is needed to effectively treat.
Can pelvic floor physical therapy help prepare for labor?
Yes, pelvic floor PT in pregnancy can help prepare you for labor. At our clinic, we do things differently by providing you with hands on treatment to establish good sacral and pelvic bone mobility, release fascial restrictions, and optimize baby's position leading up to labor. We also work with you to establish the mobility and strength you need for a variety of labor and pushing positions so that you can move intuitively in labor and not be limited. Assessing the pelvic floor and your ability to release and coordinate pushing in a variety of positions is also highly requested by many moms at our clinic and helps them feel confident when it comes times to push in labor.
Does prenatal PT help with pelvic girdle pain?
Yes, pelvic floor PT during pregnancy can help relieve pelvic girdle pain. It is one of the most common conditions that brings moms into our clinic. We aim to get to the root of the problem and often treat pelvic girdle pain with manual therapy and targeted exercises.
